Adejola Adeosun
Organist & Master Of The Music

 

Adejola has served in the Cathedral for over two decades, as Assistant-organist under Tolu Obajimi (Mrs.) and as Sub-organist since 2013 under Tunde Sosan, and now leads the musical life of Cathedral Church of Christ Lagos after his appointment as the Organist and Master of the Music.

 

Prior to his appointment here in the Cathedral, he was Assistant organist at Christ Apostolic Church, Yaba and also at Christ Apostolic Church, Itire.

 

‘Jola started his journey in music learning how to play the harmonium as a boy before proceeding to the organ. ‘Jola studied music at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education Oto Ijanikin formerly Lagos state College of Education (AOCOED) and at University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

 

He holds Musical Society of Nigeria certifications on Organ and Theory of music. Also includes ABRSM Diploma in Organ Performance. He is a student member of the Royal College of Organists, UK. In addition to his role here in the Cathedral, ‘Jola is a full-time Music Instructor at Atlantic Hall Educational Trust Council, Epe, Lagos.

 

‘Jola combines an unwavering commitment to musical excellence with a pioneering spirit, earning him a reputation for exciting and innovative commissions, and of course he is a fine recitalist and has had the privilege of gaining experience from great minds both at home and abroad some of which include: Mario Nell (Capetown SA) Professor Thorsten Mader (Germany), Huw Williams (UK), Paul Leddington-Wright (UK), Paul Carey (RSCM UK), Professor Margaret Phillips (UK) as well as James Parsons (UK).

Princewill Ubani
Sub Organist

Princewill Ubani is Sub-Organist at the Cathedral. He was appointed as an Assistant Organist in 2006.

 

Before taking up his appointment at the Cathedral, Princewill worked at Good Shepherd Church, Mobil Road, Apapa (2003-2004) as Organist and at Christ the King Church, Ajegunle as Organist and Choir Director.

 

He holds a B.A. in Music from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and a MUSON diploma, majoring on Voice and Piano as well as ABRSM certifications on Voice, Organ and Piano.

 

Princewill who started playing at the age of 14, has had the privilege of gaining experience from some great minds in the music field. He was trained on voice by Princess Banke Ademola and on the piano he was a student of the remarkable Maria Aseeva (RUSSIA) (a former resident pianist at MUSON). He has also received masterclasses from the likes of Professor Margaret Phillips, James Parson, as well as Simeon Johnson, all based in the UK.

 

Besides playing on the organ, he sings Tenor and has put up a couple of performances at the Cathedral. He is a good choir trainer and in carrying out his duties as Assisting Choirmaster & Sub-Organist, he regularly accompanies services at the Cathedral, gives short regular Organ recitals on Sundays at the end of Holy Communion, joins in training the choir and also plays a significant role in developing the portfolio of organ events at the Cathedral some of which he himself has appeared as a recitalist.

Assistant Organist

Bolade Olatunji, joined the Cathedral Choir in 2018 as an Assisting Organist.

 

Before taking up appointment at the Cathedral, he worked at the First Baptist Church, Broad Street as an Assistant Organist and later Organist (2013 - 2018) and at the Cathedral Church of St. Matthew, Ojowo ljebu-lgbo as Organist.

 

He originally started out as a pianist and got inspired to learn the organ on a visit to Christ Church Cathedral.

 

Bolade holds certifications from the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) and ABRSM on Piano, Organ as well as theory of music. He was taught how to play piano by Abiodun Odumosu and on the Organ, he received his first lessons from Tolu Obajimi (Master of Music Emeritus of the Cathedral) and Jola Adeosun.

 

Here in the Cathedral, he has also received masterclasses from the likes of Professor Margaret Phillips, James Parson, as well as Simon Johnson. He is a member of the Golden bells chorale.

 

In his role as Assisting Organist, he shares in the organ playing duties for Cathedral's services, assists in directing and training the boy choristers at choir rehearsals.

 

He is currently on study leave at the United States of America.

Olujimi Olumuyiwa
Choir Master

Olujimi Olumuyiwa is the Choirmaster at the Cathedral. He was enrolled into the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral in 1971 following his family tradition. His love of choral music was kindled as a chorister at Christ Church under the tutelage of Dr. C. 0. 0. Phillips and has been a key part of his life ever since.

 

Jimi attended the Eko Boys' High School, Lagos where himself and Godwin Saddoh (a former chorister, now a Professor of Music), took over the school's choirmastership from a mentor Ebenezer Omole in 1982 and transformed it positively. Between 1984 and 1989, he joined several choral groups including the popular Laz Ekwueme's Chorale, Lagos City Chorale to mention a few, and has performed in different parts of the country, in foreign embassies and various institutions. He performed a solo at the residence of Ambassador Lennon Walker during a celebration to mark the birth of Martin Luther King Jnr. in 1992 and he's assisted the Military, Roman Catholic and Protestant churches to win several competitions in both state and at national levels.

 

He is currently the director of the Golden Bells choral group (a group that performs regularly at the Cathedral and also at various concerts in Lagos). Jimi studied Music at the University of Lagos and holds graded music certifications on voice from the Musical society of Nigeria (MUSON). He is a pioneering member of the Cathedral Choir Orchestra and participates frequently in several musical events in the Cathedral.

 

For the last thirty-five years he has been closely associated with the music of the Cathedral; for more than fifteen years he's been conducting at the Cathedral and is responsible for the weekly training and direction of the boy choristers and probationers in singing and also theory of music. He has embraced the choral repertoire singing as a soloist at the Cathedral for several concerts and services including G. F. Handel's "Messiah" Felix Mendelssohn's "Elijah", John Sebastian Matthew's "the Paschal Victor", Felix Mendelssohn's "St. Paul" performed at the choir's 90th anniversary and recently the popularly acclaimed John Rutter's "Requiem " to name a few.

 

Alongside his work in the Cathedral Choir, Jimi teaches music at the DOWEN College, Lagos. He directs and trains the Golden Bells chorale, teaches piano and singing, and maintains a career as conductor, arranger, composer and a bass soloist.

Organ Scholar

Formerly a boy chorister of the Cathedral. He recently graduated from the MUSON School of Music Lagos with an Associate Diploma in Music-with emphases on the Piano having completed the MUSON's graded exams in pianoforte Grade 7 and the ABRSM theory exams grade 8.

 

He has undergone training under the tutelage of some musical geniuses like Mrs. Marion Akpata and Mrs. Tolu Obajimi - the Past Organist and Master of Music of the Cathedral.

 

He is presently studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of Pretoria South Africa.
